The Molly Collection

Here is my process of this collection with my character molly.

I was always fascinated the way other artist from the 40s and 50s that would publish their own pin up books. I said to myself G would it be awesome to have my own publish book of pinups. Of course, I still have a long way to go to making art that people are willing to buy but, hey maybe one day. So that's what inspired me to make this collection. I had a blast doing this I might make more in the future.

Now I couldn't have a collection without creating a character first. This gal here is molly a very ambitious but playful woman who loves the color red and other stuff I can't mention here.

Color Study

Character Designs

This I began the rough stage of these illustrations. I only went with four drawings because I had other projects and study time in the middle of this process.

Then I took the roughs to the light box for some color line art with using Prismacolor pencils.

Then I would color them with using alcohol markers ugh. I wish I had watercolors.

Finley using photoshop to give them that watercolor feel to them.

Life Drawing #2

Once in a while I like to draw other stuff besides cartoons and pin ups. Sometimes I like the draw from life because that is the only way to improve your work. Yes, I know this is not the best, but you have to keep failing until you get something right. Practice and patience are needed for improvement.

Life Drawing

Last night life drawing. I'm not the best at life drawing, but I tend to work on it as hard as I can because I believe I brings out more energy into your cartoon or comic book work.

Mermaid Gag Cartoon (Process)

Hey folks today I'll be showing you my process on how I did my mermaid gag cartoon. So, I do what every artist starts when making an Illustration a small rough thumbnail sketch. Just to get a small concept of what my pieces is going to look like, of course I don't sketch just one drawing that is a big no no. I normally doodle as many as I do until I'm satisfied. For me I treat every artwork I do like character design. It is more interesting exploring what the character is about, and the story that surrounds the character, instead of just some random illustration where all used to seeing.

Here is the first out 10 Thumbnails I drew up.

Next, I start on the rough drawing. I go as rough as I can to capture the energy of the pose, so my characters feel alive.

This is a bit of a cheat, but I'm going to stop doing this because I enjoy the paper more than the tablet. I scan the rough drawing into the computer and do a more constructive pass at the drawing again and clean it up just a tiny bit. Also added in a background to keep the character grounded into a believable setting, so I picked the ocean because well... go figure.

Finally, I start the final look for this gag cartoon by giving it a watercolor feel to the piece. It is digital but I wish I could have done it traditional, sadly I'm broke and can't afford the fancy art supplies I crave and pray for every day, so it's sad to say that I'm a really tight budget artist unfortunately. :,(

Hello, my name is Adrian Raya, and I am a cartoonist and animator. I've been drawing at a very young age up till now. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to grow up to be cartoonist and work in animation and nothing else, hopefully I'll be able to make that dream of mine come true. I love cartoons and I'll never stop loving cartoons.
